OpenStax Comes to Poland

Open textbooks developed by Rice University have been a great success throughout the United States. OpenStax textbooks are currently used in more than 1000 university courses in the country. Although textbook prices are not as much an educational obstacle in Poland as they are in the U.S., easy access to these textbooks can be challenging for Polish students. Katalyst Education — a new educational not-for-profit foundation based in Warsaw — embarked upon a mission to bring these resources to both Polish and international students studying in Poland.

Currently, Katalyst Education is in the process of recruiting academic teams from top Polish universities. The first OpenStax textbook in Polish will be “College Physics”. The teams will be asked to translate and adapt chapters of the book. Adaptation will reflect the different approaches to teaching Physics between the U.S. and Poland. The Polish textbook will be peer-reviewed before it is published online.

In parallel to working on textbooks, Katalyst Education is also helping develop the OpenStax repository platform for international audiences. Currently, the Polish team is focused on adding code to enable automatic detection of a user’s native language and display of the interface in that language. The Polish translation for the interface is ready, so users from Poland will soon be greeted in their own language whenever they visit cnx.org — the repository where the Openstax textbooks are hosted.
