Politecnico di Milano is a public scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.. It also wants to be a solid, recognisable and reliable reference point for sustainable development in Italy and Europe.
Research has always been linked to didactics and it is a priority commitment which has allowed Politecnico Milano to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world. Research constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system.
Knowing the world in which you are going to work is a vital requirement for training students. By referring back to the needs of the industrial world and public administration, research is facilitated in following new paths and dealing with the need for constant and rapid innovation. The alliance with the industrial world, in many cases favored by Fondazione Politecnico and by consortiums to which Politecnico belong, allows the university to follow the vocation of the territories in which it operates and to be a stimulus for their development.
The challenge which is being met today projects this tradition which is strongly rooted in the territory beyond the borders of the country, in a relationship which is developing first of all at the European level with the objective of contributing to the creation of a single professional training market. Politecnico takes part in several research, sites and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico's contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees Politecnico Milano taking part into the European and world network of leading technical universities and it offers several exchange and double degree opportunities and a wide range of degree programmes entirely taught in English.

POK (Polimi Open Knowledge) was launched in June 2014; it is the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) portal of the Politecnico di Milano and offers online courses that are free and open to all.
The main aim of the portal is to support all students (not just those at the Politecnico di Milano) along their university and professional pathway: from high school to university, from a bachelor's degree to a master's, and from university to the world of work. There are also many other courses for teachers, researchers, professionals and ordinary citizens.
The MOOCs on offer have been devised both by the Politecnico di Milano and by other universities and bodies/institutions. The platform also provides courses that are part of the Edvance project, the first Digital Education Hub for higher education focusing on advanced digital culture. These courses have been developed by the 17 universities and AFAM institutions involved in the project; they are mainly aimed at university students who want to deepen their knowledge by means of high-quality MOOCs, with a focus on advanced digital skills such as data literacy, artificial intelligence and digital sustainability. However, they are also open to professionals and ordinary citizens wanting to learn technical and transversal skills, and offer an up-to-date training programme aligned with the needs of the labour market, and developed together with the world of business.
The MOOCs on the platform are also directed towards teachers and educational technologists, offering training on methods and tools for digital and blended education, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence and open education.
POK is designed for everyone who is interested in continuous learning, and provides an accessible and highly innovative digital ecosystem. It also offers certificates in the form of open badges, to ensure the skills acquired can be used in curricular activities and in professional life.
