Certification Through OCW

Submitted by Haishuo Lee of Taiwan OCW Consortium

National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) is the first OCW-publishing university in Taiwan to try to issue the certificate to OCW learners. Since 2007, certification tests are held annually. It is a means to take OCW to the next level of use, and the decision had been based on the belief that OCW can provide a more meaningful learning experience for its users. NCTU does not provide certification test for all the OCW courses it provided. Instead, being one of the leading universities in engineering and science field, it chooses three basic science  subjects (Calculus, Physic, Chemistry) for the concern to reach the widest audience and reuses possible. Throughout these years, many learners on campus or self-learners outside of school have all taken the test and receive certificates. The certificated granted after passing the certification can be used to waive the course for NCTU students. Though the function for learners who are not registered in NCTU may seen limited, self-examination has become the main motivator for self-learners to take the test. Other interesting facts include examination takers that are as young as a 7 grader and as senior as in 60s; learners that come back every year to ensure they do not forget what they learn; and many other intriguing uses after the certification.
