The OER Research Hub is pleased to launch its webinar programme for September to January. Our Hewlett Foundation-funded project will provide a focus for research designed to give answers to the overall question ‘What is the impact of OER on learning and teaching practices?’ and identify the particular influence of openness. Over the past year, our project has been working in collaboration with 8 OER projects across four education sectors.
In this webinar series we will discuss our research findings from surveys; interviews and research trips, providing you with evidence for what works and when, and also established methods and instruments for broader engagement in researching the impact of openness on learning and teaching. We look forward to sharing with you.
Below is the focus of our September webinar, and a list of upcoming sessions on our programme:
Webinar: Are OER complementary or competitive with formal education? Some recent research findings Presented by Beck Pitt; Leigh-Anne Perryman and Patrina Law
Abstract: In recent years research around open educational resources (OER) has tended to focus on resources’ use in the context of formal education. However, it is becoming clear that OER have the potential for significant impact outside the formal sector, with important implications for widening participation in education. The Open University’s Hewlett Foundation-funded project the OER Research Hub has recently been taking a close look at the impact of OER on informal learners – a scarcely-investigated area of OER research. To date, our research in this area has focused on the Bridge to Success project and on users of Open University open content provided through its OpenLearn platform, and through iTunes U and YouTube. This hour-long webinar will bring you the latest findings from this research, addressing issues such as the relationship between OER and formal education and the indicators that are important to people when selecting OER. There will be an opportunity for questions and for participants to share their own experiences and research in this area.
