Oct 19: Adaptive Learning Webinar with CMU’s Simon’s Initiative and OLI Faculty

Join us for this webinar on adaptive learning with Norman Bier, the Executive Director of the Simon Initiative and Director of the Open Learning Initiative (OLI) at Carnegie Mellon University.  We will also be joined by College of the Canyons’ math professor, Dustin Silva, who teaches intermediate algebra and statistics courses, which utilize CMU OLI materials. These classes are taught in an accelerated, cohort format, whereby students complete both courses in one semester.

Date:  Monday, Oct 19, 10:am PST/1:00 PM EST

The Simon Initiative leverages and accelerates CMU’s learning science and technology ecosystem, integrating learning research into the design of innovative, instrumented instructional experiences and using the resulting data to advance ongoing theory and research.  This process has proven effective at simultaneously improving outcomes for students while advancing understanding of human learning.

Dubbed “Learning Engineering”, the initiative’s mission is to improve education for students at CMU and around the world. One exemplar of this approach is the Open Learning Initiative (OLI); a long-term research project. OLI uses learning engineering to build and improve demonstrably-effective courseware.  Through collaboration with foundations, industry, and other institutions of higher education, the work is being extended to a series of courseware, research, data, and infrastructure projects to support the application and dissemination of the learning engineering approach.
