Membership FAQs

1. Who should join the Open Education Consortium (OEC)?

Membership in the Open Education Consortium is welcome from educational institutions, organizations and corporations that support open education.  Individuals are welcome to freely use the resources available on the site, including all courses developed by our members. Currently, there is no membership category for individuals.

2. Where can we find out more about OEC Membership categories?

Information about OEC membership categories is available here.

If you have any questions on the different categories, or if you need assistance selecting the appropriate membership category, contact us at

3. We have determined the membership category to which we would like to belong. What should we do next?

Once you have determined the category to which your organization or institution would like to belong, please fill out the membership application. You will need to agree to the terms of the Memorandum of Association, along with providing information about your institution or organization and its support of open education.

4. What happens once we have submitted our application for OEC Membership?

OEC staff will send you an acknowledgement of receipt of your application. At this point, additional documentation or clarifications may be requested in order to continue with the processing of your application.

Once your membership application has undergone an initial review, it is sent to OEC Membership Committee for consideration. The OEC Membership Committee considers new applications on the 1st and the 15th of every month. The Membership Committee has 7 days to reach a decision, which is then sent to the OEC Consortium Board of Directors for endorsement. The Board of Directors has 5 days to review the Committee’s decision.

5. How long does it take before we are notified about the outcome of our application process?

The entire process (from application submission to notification of outcome of your application process) can take between 2-4 weeks. However, the Membership Committee or the Board of Directors might raise additional questions about your application that would need to be addressed before reaching a final decision. Should this happen, it could extend the time to process your application. Once a decision has been reached by the Membership Committee and endorsed by the Board of Directors a member of OEC staff will be in contact with you about the next steps.
